One of my first stories for Geographic, I went deep into a remote area of Papua New Guinea. The government was going to turn a pristine, totally unexplored region of rainforest over to logging interests or create a national park. We accomplished a multi-week trek into the area, as well as about a month in the village of Wagu. Villagers were hired to help with the expedition into the rainforest, as our team comprised biologists, ornithologists and other scientists who were collecting flora and fauna samples in this virgin territory. Here, a group of our villagers spearfish in the pure waters of the Hunstein River-the anglo name for this unmapped river. Photo 033
